Do i take folic acid?

I had methetraxate twice they both didnt work and had keyhole surgery to remove my right tube. No one has said if i should not that i had the operation 4 weeks ago.

I also had MTX and then needed surgery and wanted to know the same thing. I was told on here that the folic acid interferes with the injection working as we no longer need the MTX to work as we ended up having surgery we can start taking folic acid again but have to wait 12 weeks before ttc. I hope you are feeling well xx

Im just confused as to why i need to take it, it never worked twice and my blood tests for everything came back fine

Dear Lorna_CJ9303,

Following methotraxate injections it is important not to take any folic acid suppliments as these can interfere with the way methotraxate works. As you went on to have surgery, you are not relying on the methotraxate as a treatment so you do not have to wait until your hCG levels have fallen to pre pregnancy levels to begin taking folic acid suppliments again. You can start taking them straight away.

Following methotraxate injections however it is extremely important that you take a folic acid supplement for 12 weeks before you try to conceive. This is because the Methotrexate may have reduced the level of folate in your body which is needed to ensure a baby develops healthily. The Methotrexate is metabolised quickly but it can affect the quality of your cells, including those of your eggs and the quality of your blood for up to three months after it has been given. The medicine can also affect the way your liver works and so you need to give your body time to recover properly before a new pregnancy is considered. A shortage of folate could result in a greater chance of a baby having a neural tube defect such as hare lip, cleft palate, or even spina bifida or other NT defects. This is why the “wait” and then taking folic acid for 12 weeks before trying to conceive is so important.

I hope this helps,

Sending much love,

Karen x
