BFP after ectopic (scared it’s another one)

Hey everyone! I’m new here, so long post ahead. I apologize in advance!

I had a missed miscarriage back in December and my ectopic in early May. We were trying to conceive, so I began testing around 10 DPO. I finally got my very faint BFP (on a First Response) test at 13 DPO. This immediately seemed odd to me, because with my first two healthy pregnancies, I got my BFP around 10 or 11 DPO. Anyways, I started bleeding the following day, which was the day of my expected period. I assumed it was a chemical pregnancy, but decided to give my OB a call. She had me come in for HCG quant, which was positive for pregnancy. So for the next two weeks, she had me come in every 48 hours for repeat labwork. My numbers were doubling initially for the first week or so, before they started failing to double. By around 6 weeks, there was still no sac seen in the uterus. I was then officially diagnosed with my ectopic and given methotrexate. The mtx didn’t work, and I ended up having to have surgery. Luckily, she was able to remove the pregnancy and still save my tube. About a month or so after my surgery, I had the hsg procedure and was told everything was open and looked good. My OB told my I could try again at the end of July/beginning of August.

So fast forward to yesterday, I just got a super faint BFP at 13 DPO (again). First response test, so same as before. I went yesterday afternoon for an HCG quant and am waiting to hear back. I took another test this morning and it’s still super faint. I’m crampy feeling on the same side as my previous ectopic and can’t help but have this feeling of dread right now. I want to be excited, but I’m so worried this is happening again. When did you all get your BFP with your ectopics? Is it normal to have pain around the area of the prior ectopic during a normal pregnancy?

Hi, I got my BFP with my ectopic when I was about 5 weeks. I only did a test because I didn’t have a normal period and spotted for a couple of days. I did a weeks one about a week later and it still said 2-3 (which is actually 4-5 weeks) when I should have been 6 weeks then I had quite a big bleed on the weekend then scanned on the Monday where they saw the ectopic.

Hope all works out for you x

Dear Lauren_629,

Whispered congratulations on your pregnancy,

I found pregnancy tests are not an indication of if the pregnancy has implanted successfully. I had a very strong positive with my ectopic pregnancy and a very faint line with my successful pregnancy.

After an ectopic pregnancy, finding we are pregnant again can be a mix of emotions and I can completely understand your feeling nervous. It is perfectly normal to feel scared after the ordeal you have endured. I also felt twinges and aches after my ectopic pregnancy, particularly when I next felt pregnant. My mind started racing and I was only really able to relax to some degree after my early scan. It is a nerve-wracking time and you have a friend here who understands how you are feeling.

Speaking from UK medical practice and standards, usually doctors carry out an internal transvaginal scan at around six weeks with subsequent pregnancies after an ectopic. This is because there is a reasonable chance of seeing an embryo around this six week mark.

We advise contacting your local EPU, reminding them of your ectopic pregnancy and booking an appointment. If you are unable to self refer, contact your GP who will be able to do this for you.

Whilst I do not wish to alarm you, I sadly have to remind you that if you experience any unusual bleeding, abdominal pain, shoulder tip pain, bladder or bowel problems or feel dizzy and unwell to seek urgent medical advice. As pain is do subjective, I would advise speaking to your medical team about your pain symptoms.

Sending much love,

Karen x
