At what point should I seek fertility treatment

Hi there,

Just after some advice on what options are available and what time frames I should be working with.

Had an ectopic with right tubal removal in January 2016 following 11 cycles of trying. We are now trying again - currently on third cycle so still early days.

My question is at what point should I be going to my GP asking for checks? I am pretty sure we would not qualify for IVF as we have a son.

Thanks in advance

That might depend on where you are and what age you are. For me, I got pregnant quickly the first two times (miscarriage, then ectopic), within 2 months. Where I am, they say to look into it if you try for a year without getting pregnant, or 6 months if you are over 35. Since I am 39, my doctor started the process after 6 months of trying. However, I wasn’t going to be able to get in until about 9 months…

Good luck! I hope you get your BFP soon!

Thank you for your help. I’m 32 so I guess a year of trying is probably in order before getting any help, which is fair enough.

I guess there are things I can do at home to be more proactive like ovulation sticks - I was reluctant to try them at first as didn’t want to get too fixated on getting pregnant - not that I’m not already - but I will probably do that this month to make sure I am ovulating.

Is there anyway of testing which side you ovulate from?

It took me 7-8 months to get pregnant this time. (I’m currently 25 weeks!) I did buy ovulation sticks and used them for the last 2-3 months of trying since my cycles changed a bit after the ectopic. After trying for 5 months, I was also wondering if maybe I wasn’t ovulating, or maybe not every month. I also starting charting my temperature. I was thinking that if I did get in to see the fertility specialists, then I’d have data to take in with me.

It wouldn’t hurt to ask your family doctor about when he/she would recommend looking into fertility treatment. It is tough to not focus too much on it. I think most of us on here understand that!

I’m not sure if you can track which side you ovulate from unless you can feel it. I know they can see it on an ultrasound.

Congratulations, so nice to hear a positive story!!

You’ve inspired me to get on with the ovulation kits this cycle. Not sure I’m in tune with my body enough to feel which side I’m ovulating from although since the operation I seem to feel or at least be aware of a lot more than previously.
