Am I Experiencing An Ectopic Pregnancy?

Hello,

On March 18 I had unprotected sex with my now ex boyfriend and have been experiencing mild pains in my left abdomen (sometimes right and all over), pelvis area (time to time), and on Monday my right neck and right shoulder was in pain. I am still having periods and took a pregnancy test on Tuesday while on my period that read negative. I want to make an appointment to see my OBGYN but I am scared my mom will find out because I am on her insurance. Is there a chance that despite the negative pregnancy test I could still be experiencing an ectopic pregnancy? Please help! I am going through this all alone and I’m scared.

Dear TaurusBeautyJ,

Ectopic pregnancy can be difficult to diagnose because its symptoms are very similar to other conditions.

Abdominal pain could be due to many things including gastroenteritis or an infection. However, it could be a sign of ectopic pregnancy but I am afraid that I do not know enough to say whether this could be the cause in your circumstances.

A pregnancy test may not show as positive with an ectopic pregnancy if hormone levels are not high enough to register. I understand why it maybe difficult for you to contact your Dr, but if you have had unprotected intercourse, there is a chance you maybe pregnant and with abdominal pain, shoulder tip pain I would always advise to seek medical advice.

Although I do not wish to alarm you, if you start to feel dizzy and unwell, please attend your nearest accident and emergency department.

Sending much love,

Karen x

Thank you so much Karen! I am set to see my OBGYN tomorrow morning. I accessed my patient health account and found that I had a HCG test done on March 22 (4 days after unprotected sex) that read negative. I had no idea the doctor ordered that test because my appointment was not pregnancy related. Could the test have read negative because it was too soon to take it?

Dear TaurusBeautyJ,

Sadly I am not medically trained so cannot give you specific advice, however if you have only had unprotected intercourse once and the hCG was taken 4 days later, I would estimate that this may well be too early for the levels to show, especially urine levels.

I hope this helps,

Sending much love,

Karen x
