Alcohol after methotrexate

Hi there

I hope you can help. Two months ago I was discharged from hospital after having a methotrexate injection 9 days before.

I’m very confused about whether I can start drinking - the nurse told me to avoid alcohol for 1 to 2 months from discharge, and nhs advice on line seems to range from avoid for 7 days post injection, or up to 100 days?!

I’ve been particularly cautious as have had kidney problems when I was younger, but to be honest would love a drink after a stressful few months!

Would love clarification as to whether 2 months from discharge is long enough to mean no liver/ kidney damage?

Many thanks

Sophie

Dear Sophie123,

I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and loss,

With regards to alcohol we generally advise should refrain from drinking alcohol until the levels have fallen to a non-pregnant state. So if you have been discharged from your EPU as your hCG levels have fallen to this level, you should be fine to drink alcohol. Having said this, I am not medically trained and if you have had previous liver or kidney problems, it maybe best checking with your GP or medical team first.

Sending much love,

Karen x
