So… wandering if I’m being crazy or not and would like some advice opinions. I have had 2 ectopic this year one in Jan n one in April…had surgery both times and right tube removed 1st time and 2nd caught in stump which ruptured. Anyway I feel like I want to try again…I can’t at least until July… I think… Had methotrexate (is it 3months from when given or when levels drop?!?) Anyway I’m obvs so scared and thinking Wat if I end up having 3 in 1 year but I really want another. Anyone been in similar situation? Obvs might not catch straight away anyway. Thanks hope I’ve not rambled too much xx
Hi,
Sorry to hear you have gone through this horrible experience, not once but twice and in such a short space of time. I was treated with methotrexate back in March and am now on my third cycle and we are going to be trying again this month, I was told and my leaflet states the 3 month wait is from the day of injection. I am now nearly 14 weeks post methotrexate so should be more than enough time. I am also so scared it will goodun a second time but I think we just have to try and be positive and hope for the best. I wish you all the luck in the world when you try again x
Dear Flumpyosc,
We and other medical professionals advise you wait for three months or two full menstrual cycles (periods) before trying to conceive to allow your cycle to return and there to be a clear Last Menstrual Period (LMP) date to date a new pregnancy from – information that is invaluable in ensuring you are not suffering from another ectopic pregnancy in the future.
Following Methotrexate, you should wait until your hCG levels have fallen to below 5mIU/mL (your doctor will advise you when this is through blood tests) and then take a folic acid supplement for 12 weeks before you try to conceive. This is because the Methotrexate may have reduced the level of folate in your body which is needed to ensure a baby develops healthily. The Methotrexate is metabolised quickly but it can affect the quality of your cells, including those of your eggs and the quality of your blood for up to three months after it has been given. The medicine can also affect the way your liver works and so you need to give your body time to recover properly before a new pregnancy is considered. A shortage of folate could result in a greater chance of a baby having a neural tube defect such as hare lip, cleft palate, or even spina bifida or other NT defects. This is why the “wait” and then taking folic acid for 12 weeks before trying to conceive is so important.
Making the decision to begin trying to conceive is an emotional rollercoaster compounded by our sad loss, believe me are not alone in feeling scared. We here emotional support whenever you need us.
Sending much love,
Karen x
