5 weeks pregnant, terrified. When should I request a scan?

I’ve just found out I’m pregnant again. I think I’m 5 weeks and the hospital have asked me to wait another week for a scan. I have virtually no symptoms apart from some twinges in the side with the remaining tube and I’m convinced it’s going to be another missed miscarriage or ectopic. I had surgery in December for a ruptured ectopic and unbelievably /stupidly managed to get pregnant without trying despite taking over a year prior to the miscarriage in August. So stressed having to wait again to see what’s happening and trying to block it out so I’m not overly optimistic or worried sick :frowning:

Dear Salmon,

Whispered congratulations on your pregnancy,

After an ectopic pregnancy, finding we are pregnant again can be a mix of emotions and I can completely understand your feeling nervous. It is perfectly normal to feel scared after the ordeal you have endured. I also felt twinges and aches after my ectopic pregnancy, particularly when I next felt pregnant. My mind started racing and I was only really able to relax to some degree after my early scan. It is a nerve-wracking time and you have a friend here who understands how you are feeling.

Usually doctors carry out an internal transvaginal scan at around six weeks with subsequent pregnancies after an ectopic. This is because there is a reasonable chance of seeing an embryo around this point, so your hospital is correct in advising to have the scan in another week.

Whilst I do not wish to alarm you, I sadly have to remind you that if you experience any unusual bleeding, abdominal pain, shoulder tip pain, bladder or bowel problems or feel dizzy and unwell to seek urgent medical advice.

Sending much love and positive thoughts,

Karen x

Hi. I am in a very similar situation. just past six weeks. 20 months since losing my tube and first time pregnant since. I have my scan on Thursday. I have also been a wreck since finding out. paranoid about every twinge . I was told that to have scan before 6 weeks might be inconclusive and to wait.

Thank you for your replies. Had some cramps and a bit of slotting today so anxiety levels have been sky high. Wishing you lots of luck for Thursday, let me know how you get on x

Spotting even!!

Back from my scan. Embryo found in the right place with a heart beat present! What a relief. Dated as 6 weeks and 1 day.

Now for the next bit a worry about prior to my eptopic i has a mmc at 8 ish weeks (although it was noted to be very high in it position) I have been ttc for over 4 years and this is first time i’ve been pregnant in 20 months. I am nearly 40 and this feel like last chance salon.

Fingers crossed for you. Do you have a date for your scan next week?

That’s great news, congratulations! I can understand you’d still feel cautious but fingers crossed for the next few weeks. I think the chance of miscarriage massively reduces if a heartbeat is seen on an early scan? I have mine on Monday, it can’t come soon enough! :? Xx

good luck tomorrow. will have fingers and toes crossed for you.

Thank you. I had a bleed last night and some cramping so was convinced it was game over, but it was found in the right place with a yolk sac (which is more than when I had the missed mcr) They think I’m earlier though, around 5 weeks so have to go back in 10 days for another scan. But so far, all ok. I’m a bag of nerves! Hope you’re feeling well. Keep in touch x

Good to hear from you Salmon. They had me a week earlier that I thought although I have always been convinced I ovulate late si not really surprising. I have read somewhere about a possible link to a shortened leutal phase and eptopic pregnancy. Will continue to keep everything crossed for you. try not to worry although easier said than done. I’ve only ever had bleeding and had a bad outcome but i have had a number of friends including one who is now 30 weeks pregnant where it was just spotting.

i am feeling really naucious which i hope is a good sign!
