Hi there,
I was treated with MTX 5th July, highest Hcg was 337 4 days post MTX and have been steadily decreasing since. Last Friday they were 31.9 but today’s blood test a week later is now 43, anyone know why they would rise this late after MTX treatment? I’ve little to no pain and physically felt the best this week. I’m so disheartened and thought they’d be <15 at least today but now I’m concerned all over again. Back for bloods again Monday, any advice??
Thanks so much x
Dear sarah,
I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy loss.We do sometimes hear of hCG levels beginning to plateau for a while before they reduce again. I have no medical explanation as to why they are increasing as if that continues, you would likely need a further scan. You certainly aren’t the only person on these boards this is happening too recently.
Please make sure you have stopped all pre pregnancy vitamins and folic acid, don’t take anti-inflammatory medications and don’t drink alcohol as this may all inhibit the methotrexate from working as well.
I hope you get more positive news on your next bloods and this was just a blip.
Sending much love,
Karen x

Thanks so much Karen! I got my bloods done today and they dropped to 13.2! Must have been a blip or something, in next week again for another set of bloods (hopefully the last)
This forum has been great throughout this whole process, this was our first time trying for a baby and not what we expected at all, it’s nice to hear from others going through the same process.
Dear sarah,
I am so glad to hear the level dropped and by a good margin too. I will keep everything crossed that you are discharged soon.
We will.continue to be here for you for as long as you need,
Sending much love,

Thanks Karen! Hospital rang to officially discharge me as my levels today are now less than one! I forgot to ask if I can start folic acid from now? Or should I wait a few days until I’m probably zero?
Hi Sarah26
This has just happened to me today too. I’m 7 weeks post 2nd dose of MTX and my HCG levels have increased from 58 last week to 63 this week.
I’m happy to hear yours have finally dropped and this post has definitely given me hope this could just be a blip!
@cbooth_97 so sorry to hear you’re going through this too, I heard it’s normal for numbers to plateau and have small rises near the end, hopefully you’re the same as me and they drop by the next set of bloods!! When mine rose I drank loads of green tea that weekend and they had dropped significantly the next time, I read somewhere green tea is a folic acid antagonist so might help the numbers drop
best of luck!!!
Thank you for the green tea advice, I’ll definitely give it a go!!
Thanks so much for this thread! I’m 6 weeks post MTX and levels still over 100 (down from a high of over 2100 on day 4). The levels have been falling consistently for the last few weeks but now over the 6 week mark which the hospital are getting concerned about.
Reassured to hear that plateaus and blips are not uncommon!
I’ll be on the green tea too
Katie
Hopefully they drop soon! Mine were up the 5/6 week mark post MTX, just try cut folic from your diet and try the green tea
fingers crossed for you!
Dear Sarah,
You can start folic acid as soon as your hCG levels are at pre pregnancy levels(we usually say 5 or below) and take it for 12 weeks before trying to conceive.
