TTC after successful expectant management - do we have to wa

I was diagnosed with an ectopic about 6 weeks ago and after 2 weeks of scanning and waiting, my HCG naturally started going down and they discharged me.

It’s been 4 weeks and we have been actively trying again as I think I ovulated this week

How risky a choice is this? I know the leaflets on this site tell you to wait 2 cycles, even after expectant management to give your body a chance to heel. Has anybody just tried again straight away? What is the risk of another EP?

I’ve found trying again has helped me emotionally but physically I know my body might need some more time to recover.

After my ectopic which was treated with Methotrexate my doctor told me to wait until my HSG was back to normal then wait three cycles to ttc. I think it also has to do with how fast your body is able to get rid of the methotrexate and your overall body health. I was also told I have a 15% chance of getting another ectopic which unfortunately was the case for me. I immediately started trying TTC after the three month wait and got another ectopic. Don’t let this scare you though because you still have an 85% chance of having a normal pregnancy.

Dear Tb28,

I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and loss,

To answer your question regarding conceiving again, we and many medical professionals advise waiting for two menstrual cycles. It is important to allow time for your body to recover and emotions to surface and be worked through. This is so that you have some comfort that your body is returning to its natural rhythm and you have a last menstrual period date from which to date a new pregnancy - key information in checking you are not suffering from an ectopic pregnancy in the future. The first bleed soon after surgery for ectopic pregnancy is not classed as a period as it is the body’s response to falling hormone levels.

Importantly early scans avail if you were to fall pregnant straight away. As soon as you know you are pregnant, contact your local EPU to inform them and book in for an early scan at around six weeks. Remind them of your previous ectopic pregnancy. This self refer route is the best route in our view, however if you are unable to self refer, please contact your GP who will be able to do this for you. Hopefully you will have some comfort to know you are under the radar of medical professionals right away.

Sending much love,

Karen x
