Trying again after an ectopic

I was 6 weeks pregnant when I discovered it was an ectopic back in January, I had to receive two injections of Methotrexate, the last one being on the 19th January. My HCG levels did not drop to zero until the 8th March, as soon as they did I started taking my folic acid again. I have had one period since my level dropped to zero. I was told I should wait at least 3 months after my levels dropped to zero before trying again. However I have had unprotected sex and am worried that if I do convince then the baby may not develop correctly.

Has been 3 months since the last injection but only 6 weeks since my hcg levels dropped to zero.

has anyone been in a similar situation?

Thank you.xxxx

Dear Vonnie80,

I am sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and loss and the worries you are having now. I can understand your having concerns and this is perfectly normal after everything you have been through recently.

As a gentle reminder with Methotrexate, you should wait until your hCG levels have fallen to below 5mIU/mL (your doctor will advise you when this is through blood tests) and then take a folic acid supplement for 12 weeks before you try to conceive. This is because the Methotrexate may have reduced the level of folate in your body which is needed to ensure a baby develops healthily. The Methotrexate is metabolised quickly but it can affect the quality of your cells, including those of your eggs and the quality of your blood for up to three months after it has been given. The medicine can also affect the way your liver works and so you need to give your body time to recover properly before a new pregnancy is considered. A shortage of folate could result in a greater chance of a baby having a neural tube defect such as hare lip, cleft palate, or even spina bifida or other NT defects. This is why the “wait” and then taking folic acid for 12 weeks before trying to conceive is so important.

I thought I’d mention that before having a period you have to ovulate and it is possible to become pregnant without having a proper period first, if you are not using contraception. I am not medically trained and with such limited information, I cannot advise you on your chance of pregnancy at this time. If you miss a period, as there is a chance you maybe pregnant, please do contact your doctors as soon as you can. Sadly I do have to remind you that if you have a positive pregnancy test and experience any bleeding, abdominal pain, shoulder tip pain or feel dizzy and unwell, please seek urgent medical advice.

Sending much love,

Karen x
