Hi,
I had an ectopic pregnancy back in the end of May. I didn’t find out it was ectopic until beginning of June. My 12 weeks (3 months) since my last methotrexate injection is coming up early next week, and I am due to be ovulating a few days after that. So my question is, would it be save to try this cycle or should I wait until my next cycle? I did start taking prenatals as soon as my HCG was zero which was back in July.
Thanks!
Hi Kriddle7,
I’m not medically qualified to comment on your specific situation, anyone who suffers an ectopic pregnancy is advised to avoid becoming pregnant for at least two proper menstrual (period) cycles after their treatment, which is normally about three months. This allows there to be a clear LMP (Last Menstrual Period/conception) date, to date a new pregnancy from. It also allows the internal inflammation and bruising to heal and for the necessary process of grief to surface and be worked through.
In your case, your hcg was at 0 in July and you may feel that you want to wait another month for your body to recover. As well, you have started your folic acid vitamins which is good, but if that was in July, it wouldn’t have been the 12 weeks as of yet. Methotrexate can affect the way your liver works and so you need to give your body time to recover properly and to have taken folic acid supplements before a new pregnancy is considered. The current advice is to take folic acid for at least 12 weeks before you conceive but you must not begin to take folic acid supplements until the hCG levels have fallen to below 5<mIU/mL.
You know your body best. However, it can take up to three months to even begin to process traumatic events so please be patient and kind to yourself and allow time to grieve and heal both physically and emotionally. We will be here for you for as long as you need.
With good wishes,
Michele
