Side Pains in Next Pregnancy

Hi,

I was just wondering whether it is normal to have pains in your side in your next pregnancy after an ectopic? Basically my story is I had an ectopic pregnancy in January. This was treated with methotrexate and I am now 5/6ish weeks pregnant again. Because of my previous ectopic pregnancy and my experiencing mild cramps in my left side (my ectopic pregnancy side) I had an early internal scan today. This found what is most likely the very early stages of a pregnancy in my uterus (woohoo!!). But they haven’t ruled out the possibility of an ectopic pregnancy all together because its so early and the imaging on my left side wasn’t as good as they would have liked. Now they want me to get blood tests and go back in 14 days. So with all this in mind I have been wondering whether anyone else has experienced a non-ectopic pregnancy after an ectopic pregnancy with side pains? I also wondered what would cause these pains if everything is in the right place?

Thank you!

Hi ChrisWin1,

A whispered congratulations on the pregnancy, and I’m glad to hear that you’re being looked after. I know how challenging our future pregnancies can be following ectopic pregnancy. It is also the case that following our ectopic experiences, we may have heightened sensations. Every twinge, pain, and sensation can create anxieties about how the pregnancy is progressing. I would suggest that you keep a pain diary, noting the location and strength of the pain and anything that helped to relieve it. I also believe that women need to advocate for themselves and ask the questions of their GPs. Please feel confident in asking the questions you have, especially if you are feeling increasing pain.

It can be very difficult to quiet our minds, and I hope you can be extra kind to yourself and take things easy during this time. I hope the pain settles as things progress, giving you some additional peace and reassurance.

With good wishes,

Michele

I have no medical advice, but being that this was from July, I’m sure you have your answer by now anyway.

I did also just have a scan today at 5weeks 5days due to pain where my previous ectopic was. I also had a uterine pregnancy. So it does seem possible to have lingering pain from a prior ectopic.

I will say my pain with the “normal” pregnancy was mostly achey with a few “stabby” pains that lasted less than a second before returning to achey. The pain kept me awake at night and made certain positions uncomfortable but I never had any bleeding and it wasn’t as intense as with the ectopic.
