Scared it's another ectopic

I was diagnosed with an ectopic pregnancy at the end of February this year and was treated with a shit of mtx.

A week and a half ago I found out I was pregnant again and was thrilled! I felt little twinges but told myself everything is fine and this time it will be in the right place. About 6 days ago I started spotting and the spotting turned to light bleeding. I went to the ER so scared I was having another ectopic. With my previous ectopic I had no pain at all but light spotting. At the hospital they took my hug and it was only 400, which I think is quite low for 5 weeks pregnant. They tried doing a scan but obviously couldn’t truly see anything with my numbers being so low. They sent me home and asked I come get my blood done every two days, until my numbers are large enough for a scan.

I’m terrified that it’s another ectopic. I know bleeding isn’t good in early pregnancy but I wonder if someone has experienced this and went on to have a normal pregnancy. Also does anyone know if it’s okay to have only hcg 400 at 5.5 weeks?

I can’t imagine going through another ectopic- it was the hardest thing I’ve gone through. My husband and I have been trying for so long and I really feel we need a miracle to happen. Im trying to stay positive but it’s hard.

I would appreciate any positive stories or advice to help give me some hope

A dose of mtx (I don’t know why it showed up as sensored above:))

Hello Ronnie I was just wondering how you are getting on and do you have an outcome yet? I am in a similar situation and I’m searching for hope xx

Dear Ronnie89,

I am so sorry to hear that you are going through such a difficult time,

In isolation, hCG tests only provide a part of the picture - declining levels indicate that a pregnancy has ended and will be miscarried. It can also possibly indicate an ectopic pregnancy that is “self-resolving”. Also hCG levels rising by less than 66% over 48 hours means it is likely (but not certain) that it is ectopic. If levels rise normally, they suggest the pregnancy is implanted in the uterus. You may see from this that hCG levels only indicate certain possibilities and are not in themselves a definitive guide. A positive identification of an implanted embryo on a scan is usually needed before a final diagnosis/certainty that the pregnancy has implanted in the uterus. This is possibly the reason why your doctors are waiting until your appointment to carry out further tests.

Sadly I do have to remind you that if you experience any unusual bleeding, abdominal pain, shoulder tip pain, bladder or bowel problems or feel dizzy and unwell please seek urgent medical advice.

Sending much love and warm hugs,

Karen x
