Dear Lorna_CJ9303,
I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and loss.
It is normal to experience some pain as you recover over the next few weeks and pain and bruising is part of the healing process. The discomfort and bruising should reduce over the next few weeks and I would suggest taking the pain relief that has been prescribed for you as directed by your doctors.
Whilst I do not wish to alarm you, if you find that you have an increased body temperature of more than 37°C or offensive smelling discharge or the wound site starts oozing or feels hot to touch, please do get medical attention as soon as possible as these can be signs of infection. If you continue to feel dizzy and faint, we also advise talking to your GP.
Experiencing an ectopic pregnancy is a huge ordeal and you are in the early stages of recovery. Your body needs time to heal from your surgery which is in itself a gruelling task. You have also had to process the loss of your baby and been through an immense rollercoaster of emotions - all of this will take time to come to terms with.
I know you are finding it frustrating but you should take it very easily for about six weeks after surgery. Your body will be using its energies to heal internally. It is normal to feel physically and emotionally exhausted during this time and please do be kind to yourself. Recovery can take time and some days will be better than others, one day you maybe ok and the next you maybe in discomfort or more emotional. This is perfectly usual and the healing process will go back and forth in this way for however long you need. It is important to listen to your body’s signals and pain and feeling tired are your body’s signs to tell you to rest. We suggest keeping a healthy balanced diet, drinking lots of water and resting. Once your wounds have healed, very gentle exercise such as a short walk can help, but please do take this slowly.
Sending much love,
Karen x

Hello everyone. What an awful way of end the year. On wednesday i went to the hospital because I was 7 weeks pregnant and I was having a quite heavy brown discharge and I just knew something wasnt right. At the epu they confirmed and ectopic pregnancy on my left tube and a laparoscopy took my pregnancy and left tube away. Since wednesday I have been feeling ok physcally and super down mentally. Today which is the 4th day post-op i woke up with cramping and heavy bleeding with clots. Called the doctor and he said to go and see him so i did. He didnt check me really, he talked to me and said it was normal… as I dont fill one pad x hour. The problem is… my body did let me down on wednesdY, I could not believe I didnt had any other signs that something was wrong… and now, im worried sick. I supose im stilm trying to get over the shock of wednesday but the blood and the clots are making me freak out- thinking what If im bleeding internally and have no idea about it?
Any suggestions on how to deal with my anxiety and panic?
I have an awful obsession that im bleeding inside and I just dont know about it.
Dear Aworriedgirl,
I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and loss. It is an overwhelming experience and I will do my best to help.
It is not unusual for women to bleed after treatment for ectopic pregnancy. This first bleed after treatment is a response to falling hormone levels and involves shedding of the uterine lining and is not classed as a period. It is the body’s response to falling hormone levels because you are sadly no longer pregnant. The body expels the lining of the uterus that had built up in preparation for the pregnancy because it is no longer needed. This process involves vaginal bleeding - it can be clotty or like one of your usual periods and some women have bleeding/spotting for up to six weeks.
While this is usually nothing to worry about, if you find that the bleeding increases so that you are soaking more than a pad in an hour or have offensive smelling discharge or body temperature of more than 37°C, please do get medical attention.
Sadly I am not medically trained so if you remain concerned about your bleeding or start to feel dizzy and unwell, please do not hesitate to once again seek medical advice.
