Pregnancy after ectopic ?

Hi everyone, had my ectopic pregnancy resolved by mtx discharged 3 weeks ago, i really want another baby but I am petrified of it happening again or something going wrong at least ! Has anyone got any advice on how to get over that fear and find the courage to try? Any help would be amazing thanks xx

Dear Emma,

It is normal to feel anxious about the future. We experience a mix of emotions from wanting to try again to being petrified of what may lie ahead. We never forget, but we can learn to accept what happened. It is a slow process that might be weeks or months ahead. In time, we can get to a place where we feel comfortable trying again. When this is, is individual for each person. There is no timeframe for recovery, take each day as it comes.

Importantly early scans avail. As soon as you know you are pregnant, contact your local EPU to inform them and book in for an early scan at around six weeks. Remind them of your previous ectopic pregnancy. This self refer route is the best route in our view. Hopefully you will have some comfort to know you are under the radar of medical professionals right away.

The chances of a further ectopic after a first in UK is 10%. So that’s 90% chance of the embryo being in right place next time.

While generally it is possible to conceive after an ectopic pregnancy, the amount of time it takes varies from couple to couple. Factors include age, general health, reproductive health and how often you have sex, among other things. It may be comforting to know that 65% of women are successfully pregnant within 18 months of experiencing an ectopic pregnancy and some studies suggest this rises to around 85% after two years.

Importantly, help is available if conceiving naturally has not yet been successful after some time trying - and the EPT advises that women under 35 should seek medical advice following 12 months trying to conceive and those over 35 should seek advice after 6 months.

Making the decision to begin trying to conceive is an emotional rollercoaster compounded by our sad loss. Again, you are not alone. We here emotional support whenever you need us. There is a specific Preparing for your Next Pregnancy board you can look at too whenever feel ready which you may find helpful.

Sending much love,

Karen x

Hi Emma,

I know exactly how you feel. To give you some hope and reassurance my first pregnancy was ectopic, I too was treated with methotrexate and my second pregnancy was successful. These boards are full of positive stories so try not to loose heart.

Hi Emma & Karen,

Im going through the exact same. I had an ectopic in august with a methotrexate injection on September 1st.

My partner and I are desperate to try again, however I’m petrified.

I had a scan after my ectopic to see if everything was okay, and they found a cyst in my other tube.

Im so worried something is wrong with me, and it’ll happen again.

Karen, how long after your ectopic did you conceive?

Thank you

Cathrine x

Dear Catherine,

I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy loss,

The worry if having another ectopic is real, it breaks my heart that It can strips away all the fun and excitement of ttc. Keep in your mind that there is 90% chance of It being in the right place next time and you will also have an early pregnancy scan.

It took around 4/5 months for us to conceive (I am a little sketchy with dates as it was almost 13 years ago.

For now, be kind to yourself and allow time to grieve, to heal both physically and emotionally.

Sending much love,

Karen x

Im in the same position. I was diagnosed with an etopic pregnancy, 6 weeks ago I had a methotrexate injection, my HCG is now 56, I’m still bleeding 8 weeks on and having on and off pain. I plan on trying again end of March but worried it will happen again. Bleeding and pain for 8 weeks isn’t something I want to go through again, plus the fear of tubal rupture or losing a pregnancy, it’s a lot, but I guess it’s something we have to push through.

Dear chaoticblues,

I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy loss,

It is normal to feel anxious about the future. We experience a mix of emotions from wanting to try again to being petrified of what may lie ahead. As I mentioned before, as soon as you know you are pregnant, contact your local EPU to inform them and book in for an early scan at around six weeks. Remind them of your previous ectopic pregnancy. This self refer route is the best route in our view. Hopefully you will have some comfort to know you are under the radar of medical professionals right away.

As a reminder, the chances of a further ectopic after a first in UK is 10%. So that’s 90% chance of the embryo being in right place next time. This was a piece of information, I kept in my head as a positive reminder.

Can I gently remind you, following Methotrexate injection, it is important to wait until your hCG levels have reached pre-pregnancy levels (your doctor will tell you when this is) then take folic acid supplements for 12 weeks. This is because the Methotrexate may have reduced the level of folate in your body which is needed to ensure a baby develops healthily. The Methotrexate is metabolised quickly but it can affect the quality of your cells, including those of your eggs and the quality of your blood for up to three months after it has been given. The medicine can also affect the way your liver works and so you need to give your body time to recover properly before a new pregnancy is considered. A shortage of folate could result in a greater chance of a baby having a neural tube defect such as hare lip, cleft palate, or even spina bifida or other NT defects. This is why the “wait” and then taking folic acid for 12 weeks before trying to conceive is so important.

Sending much love,
