Period after ectopic pregnancy

Hi, i am currently 14 days post op from ectopic pregnancy & the removal of left side fallopian tube.
With all the overloading information and being overwhelmed from the whole traumatic experience, i am wondering when should i be expecting my first period? Will the period be worse for the first time (as in cramps/heavy bleeding)? Is there any warning signs to look for? Or should everything be as it normally is when due to be having period?
Normally my cycle is 28day.
Thank you in advance
Steph

I’d like to know the same! Currently 9 days post surgery, I really feel like there’s not much info out there!

Hello Steph and Chloenb

I am sorry to hear about your ectopic pregnancy and difficult time. Experiencing and ectopic pregnancy can certainly be a whirlwind with so much to come to terms with and navigate ahead. Having questions about physical recovery including periods is very understandable. While I am not a doctor and cannot comment on individual cases, I can certainly give some general information on periods after an ectopic pregnancy to try to help.

Your menstrual periods after an ectopic pregnancy can take a while to re-establish. They can restart any time between four and ten weeks after treatment and most find that their first period arrives sometime around week six or seven after surgery.

Before you can have a period, ovulation needs to occur. It is perfectly possible to ovulate 14 days after surgical treatment. It is important to be aware that it is possible to become pregnant even without having the first period if you are not using some form of contraception when having sexual intercourse. We have information on our website about returning to normal activities including intimacy and contraception.

The first period may be more painful or less so than usual, heavier or lighter, and last for longer or shorter than usual – there really is no set pattern. You should be able to manage the discomfort with over-the-counter (OTC) pain relief medications and should not be soaking a pad in less than an hour. If this is not the case, you should seek medical advice.

We have information about bleeding and periods after an ectopic pregnancy on our website here:

I hope that this information helps and we are here if you have any further questions.
