No symptoms with methotrexate

Hello! I’m quite anxious about not feeling much of anything after methotrexate. I am day 4 ( had my labs drawn this morning) and have only had mild cramping with an almost itchy/burny sensation on the ectopic side, no bleeding.

My numbers were 976 on the day of injection, so I’m confident nothing has ruptured. I’m just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience and success from the injection?

I had the methotrexate with a hcg of 4600. I was bleeding before the injection for 2 weeks but it was light to moderate. So had the injection and I had no cramping nor did I bleed heavier and my hcg still dropped the first week by 1500. So I wouldn’t worry about no symptoms in that area it will still likely work.

I’ve been pretty much the same. I’m on day 7 today and I’ve been okay. A little more tired than usual after the first few days but that’s about it! My numbers still went down so please don’t worry

Dear jennyjenny,

I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy loss,

Some women do not bleed with methotrexate treatment, this can be normal.

It is also very common for hCG to rise on day 4 bloods as the action of methotrexate isn’t instantaneous so the cells will have continued to divide for two or three days after the injection was given, and some cells release more hCG when they start to disappear. Your doctors are looking to see a drop in your hCG value of at least 15% between days four and seven. If there has not been a 15% drop, this is when the doctors will consider a second dose of methotrexate or surgery.

I hope.this helps reassure you a little. We have more information on methotrexate treatment on our website which I have added here.

We always advise to be mindful of your symptoms and if they worsen in any way, please seek urgent medical advice.

Sending much love,

Karen x
