Length of remaining tube

Hi Everyone,

Had a ruptured ectopic pregnancy 3 weeks ago. Both baby and my right tube was removed. They have looked at my left remaining tube and state no blockages. However, they said my left tube is quite long and bendy. Has anyone had any issues TTC with the length of their tube? I’m just so worried about a 2nd ectopic when we do finally TTC again.

Hannah

Dear hannah,

I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy loss. As a charity we cannot provide specific medical advice.

In an adult, the fallopian tubes are around 10 to 12 centimeters (cm) long, although this can vary substantially from person to person. I am not aware of tube length being an issue for fertility but this maybe an area that is not researched well.

The chances of a further ectopic after a first in UK is 10%. So that’s 90% chance of the embryo being in right place next time.

While generally it is possible to conceive after an ectopic pregnancy, the amount of time it takes varies from couple to couple. Factors include age, general health, reproductive health and how often you have sex, among other things. It may be comforting to know that 65% of women are successfully pregnant within 18 months of experiencing an ectopic pregnancy and some studies suggest this rises to around 85% after two years.

Importantly, help is available if conceiving naturally has not yet been successful after some time trying - and the EPT advises that women under 35 should seek medical advice following 12 months trying to conceive and those over 35 should seek advice after 6 months. If you have any concerns however, I would suggest speaking to your medical team.

Sending much love,

Karen x

Hey Hannah,

I’m sorry you’ve gone through this. I don’t know the cause of my etopic pregnancy. I mean the nhs docs and nurses said older women or women who do IVF are more likely to have an ectopic pregnancy but to me that’s not a valid reason.

I was more messaging to say I can relate how you feel trying to conceive again. I didn’t rupture I had the methotrexate injection, I was told collapsing and bleeding out was possible, then to bleed for 12 whole weeks knowing any time that could happen was traumatising and I realised I still am. Even my last period the pain gave me flashbacks when I was in severe ectopic pain.

I’m now trying to conceive again and it’s not the innocent genuine experience it once was. It’s clouded by my experience. But I am still trying, going through the motions and not letting the fear take over me.
