Healing/Your body after an ectopic

I went through an ectopic pregnancy from the end of February through the middle of May. I had a lot of issues with my OB’s office and feel like none of my questions were ever truly answered for what was to come DURING and what was to come AFTER besides that they couldn’t give me any definitive answers for anything because ectopics are so different from miscarriages…

A big thing to note with my ectopic is that after doing 1 round of methotrexate, they believe I did rupture (I felt it happen late at night and went in for a sonogram) but didn’t require surgery and that my body would absorb everything. Has anyone else experienced that first hand? I haven’t been able to find any posts on it from my own research.

A few months later and I’m still experiencing quite sharp pain on the side it was on and whenever I’m ovulating/on my period, I’m absolutely miserable. I know there’s scar tissue and things that can contribute to that. My biggest question I guess is my OB never had me come back in to look over everything and I would assume that they would since I apparently ruptured? Should I look somewhere else and see about getting a thorough check or since I know that I got my period back, just be patient and let my body do what it needs to do in its own time and not worry?

Dear kenziebyrd,

I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy loss and if the worrying time you are going through.

I have to admit, it is very unusual to hear that someone’s doctor thought they had ruptured but not been given surgery. It is a scenario I haven’t heard from before.

I would certainly suggest going back to your doctors or seeking a second opinion. They will be able to complete an ultrasound scan or even possibly a tubal patency test, in your specific circumstances to check your tube (we don’t often advise these) and I have added more information on the test here

Having more advice from a healthcare professional may help to ease your concerns too.

Sending much love,
