I received the methotrxate injection 4 weeks ago today. Before the injection my Hcg level was 6600 and within the first week it dropped really well. I got my level checked yesterday and it was 155 and my level is now starting to plateau as last week it was 172 and the week before that it was 286.
I’ve to go back in a couple of days to get my level checked again but they have mentioned that I might need a second injection that I really don’t want. Can anyone offer any advice? Is there any alternative to a second injection? Feeling a bit down about it all.

I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and loss,
I am afraid it is difficult to predict how long it will take for your hormone levels reach non-pregnant levels. As we are all individual, our bodies respond differently to the drug and it depends on factors like how high levels reached and our unique physiology. What I can say is that it can take a number of weeks and, while it can take some time, it is not as invasive a procedure as surgery. It is also encouraging that your levels are falling although I appreciate that it can be a drawn out process. Also, in terms of chances of future successful pregnancies, studies do not show a significant difference between treatment routes, whether surgical, medical using methotrexate or expectant management (allowing time for the body to resolve the pregnancy itself).
Some ladies do require a second dose of methotrexate if levels rise or do not fall as expected. I can understand your feeling nervous about more treatment and this is very normal. Recovery from ectopic pregnancy is a challenging time and it is very important to ensure that you stay safe. Your doctors can guide you through your treatment and we are here to lean on for emotional support, too.
