Hi everyone
Could anyone please answer a question for me.
I had methotrexate on 14th November then again on 21st November and my levels reached 2 by 19th December. The nurses at the hospital have given me differing answers so I wonder if anyone else can help.
I was told I could start trying again on 14th Feb this year as that’s 12 weeks from the last dose but then another said no it’s 12 weeks from the levels hitting 2 because of folic acid levels but I’ve had a blood test last week which shows that my folic acid levels are normal so would I be ok to try on the earlier date of the 12 weeks from last dose?
Thanks
Emma
Dear Emma,
We have many questions regarding taking folic acid suppliments post methotraxate injections, it is quite confusing and often cause for concern.
We and many medical professionals advise that if you have had treatment using Methotrexate (whether one or two injections), you should wait until your hCG levels have fallen to below 5mIU/mL (as yours have) and then take a folic acid supplement for 12 weeks before you try to conceive.
This is because the Methotrexate may have reduced the level of folate in your body which is needed to ensure a baby develops healthily. The Methotrexate is metabolised quickly but it can affect the quality of your cells, including those of your eggs and the quality of your blood for up to three months after it has been given. The medicine can also affect the way your liver works and so you need to give your body time to recover properly before a new pregnancy is considered. A shortage of folate could result in a greater chance of a baby having a neural tube defect such as hare lip, cleft palate, or even spina bifida or other NT defects. This is why the “wait” and then taking folic acid for 12 weeks before trying to conceive is so important.
I would advise to follow this advice regardless of your recent blood test, but do chat to your GP if you have any concerns.
Sending much love,
Karen x
