Hi everyone
I had methotrexate treatment on Monday but my ectopic then ruptured and I had surgery on Thursday.
Now that I don’t need the methotrexate to do anything anymore, I want to start building my folic acid supply back up, with an eye on trying IVF in a few months’ time.
If I start taking folic acid now, will it still be impacted by the methotrexate that’s in my system? Can I count it towards 12 weeks’ of folic acid build up (which I know is what’s needed following methotrexate treatment), even though there’s still methotrexate in my body?
I know I need to wait 3 months’ minimum following methotrexate before looking at IVF. For those who have methotrexate treatment for the management of an ectopic pregnancy, do you need to wait until HCG levels hit 0 and then have 12 weeks’ of folic acid build up before trying again? Feels like that could be more like 5 months or so, rather than 3?
Thanks
Ilana
Dear Ilana,
As you have sadly had to have surgery, you no longer need to wait for hCG levels to get to zero before taking folic acid.
Folic acid can stop methotrexate from working which is why you shouldn’t take it until your hCG levels are zero. As you are no longer needing methotrexate as a form of treatment, you can start taking folic acid straight away and start counting this as your 3 months.
I hope this helps,
Best wishes,
Karen x
