Folic Acid after methotrexate

Hi all,

I have finally finished my mtx journey. I have been discharged from hospital with a HCG if 9 (not as low has I hoped but they seemed happy with that). After deciding to wait another week to start folic acid again, just to give it another week for levels to drop a bit more, I was wondering if I can double my dose of folic acid for the next 12 weeks to bump up my levels before trying again in 3 months time? Or is it pointless and/or bad for me?

Thanks in advance

Natasha

Hi.

My understanding is as long as you take it for 3 months it’s fine. Just the normal dosage as well. That is enough time to give you time to recover and your body to replenish its folic.

If you want to get more naturally there are lots of food with folic but I wouldn’t take more in tablet form unless your doctor has told you.

I’m at 11 weeks on folic now so nearly the other end!!

I’ve just been discharged from hospital on Tuesday (20 August) after been told that my hcg levels are down to 7 after 4 long weeks following the Methotrexate injection. I feel relieved that we finally have some normality of no more trips to the hospital for bloods.

I’m going to give it another week then start taking folic acid again in preparation for trying again in October.

I’m excited but scared of trying again, so scared it will happen again. Also scared that we won’t conceive!

Dear Nlaver88,

I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and loss,

We recommend taking normal dosage of folic acid tablets for 12 weeks before trying to conceive.

It is normal to feel anxious about the future. We generally feel a mix of emotions from wanting to try again to being petrified of what may lie ahead. We never forget, but we can learn to accept what happened. It is a slow process that might be weeks or months ahead.

In time, we can get to a place where we feel comfortable trying again. When this is, is individual for each person. There is no timeframe for recovery, take each day as it comes.

Importantly early scans avail. As soon as you know you are pregnant, contact your local EPU to inform them and book in for an early scan at around six weeks. Remind them of your previous ectopic pregnancy. This self refer route is the best route in our view. Hopefully you will have some comfort to know you are under the radar of medical professionals right away.

Sending much love,

Karen x
