First ectopic in 2016 - surgical removal of right tube
second ectopic 2017 - treated with MTX
my question is: has anyone ever got pregnant successfully from a tube that has held/caused a previous ectopic? I only have one tube left which had my second ectopic in there and am terrified of the future
I have so many thoughts and questions - should we try again? should we get the HSG test done? should we go for ivf? will this result in another EP? Will we even get funding?
I’m sorry to hear that you’ve suffered a second ectopic pregnancy and loss. As you know, it can take a toll both physically and mentally. As well, with the conflicting information can make the situation ever more confusing.
While I am not a medical doctor and have limited information on your history, I can say and as you’ve mentioned, the egg from tubeless side can be picked up by other Fallopian tube, and that means that fertility is not halved with having a Fallopian tube removed. Conservative estimates suggest that an egg produced on the tubeless side manages to descend the remaining tube around 15 to 20% of the time. This means that rather than your fertility being halved it has been affected by around 30% or, looking at it another way, it means we have around a 70% opportunity of conception with each menstrual (period) cycle.
It can be possible to conceive even after experiencing two ectopic pregnancies, but the time it takes can vary from couple to couple. While, the chance of a subsequent ectopic pregnancy after a first is around 10 per cent. Factors include age, your and your partner’s general and reproductive health and how often you have intercourse (sex) etc. Studies show that around 65 per cent of women are healthily pregnant within 18 months of an ectopic pregnancy and this rises to around 85 per cent within two years. Again, looking at this another way, there is a 90 per cent chance of the embryo implanting in the uterus with a future pregnancy. Although I should mention that even with IVF there does remain the risk (which is an increased risk) of a further ectopic pregnancy.
I would suggest that you and your husband continue to speak to your doctors to obtain guidance to help you make the right decision for you both.
With good wishes,
Michele
