Best Time to TTC

Hi there,

I first discovered that I had an EP at about 5 weeks. As my betaHCG levels was in a decreasing trend, I was offered expectant management. It took about 8 weeks for my betaHCG to drop from 5000 to near zero.

I also had a scan when my betaHCG level was near zero and the mass was about 3cm in size. One week later, I had another scan and it reduced to about 2cm+. Its been 3 months since I found out about my EP, I have had 2 normal menstrual cycles since then but a scan I did earlier this week showed that the size of mass was still about 1.8cm. Should I wait it out till the mass has completely been reabsorbed or is it safe to TTC?

Would greatly appreciate any advice, thank you in advance.

Dear WL,

I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy loss,

This is a difficult question to answer as in the UK it is not common practice to be scanned following ectopic pregnancy. Women and people are usually advised to wait until there hCG is negative and then to wait for three months if you have had methotrexate, or for two full menstrual cycles (periods) after surgery or expectant management, before trying to conceive.

As routine scanning isn’t offered, there is no robust research to tell us how long it usually takes for masses to be absorbed. This is why the waiting for 2 menstrual cycles is advised as it allows time for this to happen.

As you have reached the 2 month timeline currently advised, you can try when you feel ready. If you want to wait longer, that is also your choice. There is no set timeline for when we are ready to try to conceive again. Do things at your own pace, when you feel comfortable and ready.

Sending much love,

Karen x
