Advice on the timescale fur the injection treatment

Hi everyone.

Thank you for sharing your experiences, it is such a difficult thing to come to terms with and seemingly something few people speak openly of. So I appreciate your candor.

I’m currently sat next to my partner in hospital as she attempts to deal with the pain from the injection treatment.

She had the injection a week ago and since then we have been in and out of hospital as she suffered severe pain seemingly out of nowhere. I know this is a result of the treatment, and her HGC levels have begun to drop as the doctors hoped for, but I was wondering what other people’s experiences were of the pain, how long it went on for and how often it flared up when they had the injection treatment.

I hate to see her in such pain and want to be able to reassure her that although terribly difficult it will eventually pass. We have found it very difficult to get clear and concise advice on this from the medical staff, though they have been patient, caring and thorough.

I know the anxiety of the unexpected pain is making my partner incredibly upset and I would appreciate any advice you all may have.

Many thanks

S

Hi

I didn’t have the injection in the end but was very anxious about it and it’s been on the table for a month.

From what I’ve read of people’s experiences, sounds like she’s had a particularly bad time of it. Everyone I’ve read has been couple of days to a week. I think it’s easier the lower hcg you start with, so perhaps this is a factor?

Has she been rescanned?

Awful situation. It won’t be forever but must feel it like when you’re suffering. Thinking of you both

Dear S,

I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and loss and the difficult time your partner is going through.

I too experienced worsening pain following the methotrexate injection and it was at its peak around a week after the injection, it then gradually settled. I am sorry I cannot give you a precise timescale as our ectopic pregnancy was 8 years ago.

I am glad to hear her hCG levels are falling but you have done exactly the right thing in seeking medical advice with the pain.

We have more information about the methotrexate injection here, but please do continue to discuss any worsening pain with you EPU or medical team,
