Trying to conceive whilst waiting for IVF

Hi all,

I haven’t been on here in a while after I initialy joined over a year ago after having an ectopic pregnancy. Basically, me and my husband have now been referred for IVF after almost three years of trying to conceive and an ectopic pregnancy in December 2012. The doctors say that I have tubal damage as a result of severe pelvic inflammatory disease which I had years ago after being treated for abnormal cells. We are now waiting for IVF treatment which we should be starting in the next few months…just waiting for availablility so have to ring on the first day of my cycle every month until accepted.

I just wondered if anyone could offer any advice on whether they think we should continue trying to conceive naturally during this time as I am so scared that I might have another ectopic which will then prevent or delay me from having our IVF attempt, as well as the emotional trauma which as we know from last time is devastating. But then you hear so many stories of people falling pregnant whilst waiting for IVF treatment. We just don’t know what to do for the best and I just wondered if anyone is in a similar situation or could offer any advice on this.

Thank you,

Harry 2013

Dear Harry2013,

Apologies I missed this message earlier.

I know this is ‘sitting on the fence’ kind of advice but you should do what feels right for you and your partner. Medical research says that you are absolutely fine to try to conceive naturally while waiting for IVF having had an ectopic (unless your doctor has specifically indicated otherwise - we don’t have access to your notes) but if you think it will be too worrying and distressing then you may be better off avoiding the stress and emotionally preparing for the IVF treatment.

We are always here for you throughout if you need us.

Much love,

Hi Harry

I would seek advice from IVF clinic but I was told when my second ectopic was discovered conceived through IVF that IVF is a risk factor for it. I would ask your clinic about this. Therefore i took from this that however illogical it appears that ectopic is still quite a risk for IVF

Your case may be different to mine so ask your clinic but just wanted to out you in pic that IVF does not rule out ectopic.

Take care and best wishes to you
